In 1809, Nathan Whitman lived in Elbert County, Georgia. Arthur Jones wrote him a promissory note in 1811. Whitman was involved in the sale of cotton & produce, the price of which had fallen so that he was nearly insolvent. Before the note came due Jones mortgaged to Whitman his wagon & other items. Jones then obtained a judgment against Whitman to prevent the foreclosure on the mortgage.
