Joseph Cooke had an enslaved man named Henry. Cooke hired him out to Harris for a lease of one year, advertising Henry as a compliant servant. However, after Harris had paid a part of the lease & bought Henry clothes, he ran away. Henry was jailed, released by Harris, then ran away again. Cooke agreed to release Harris from the lease, but did not return the value of Henry's clothing. Harris sued for this value to be returned to him.
