Related documents may be located in ET 814. Andy Williams, also known as Andrew Williams or Henry Williams is accused of murdering Adolph Dutch, by beating him with a stick or club. Adolph Dutch was a jail guard who took his prisoner, Andy Williams, to look for a watch he had stolen and hidden near Birds Mill, 6 miles from Chattanooga. On their journey Williams hit Dutch from behind, killing him.

This case was instituted for the purpose of collecting $1.88 penalties which had been paid under protest to the plaintiff, Alvin Shipp- the county trustee. A question was raised as to whether the deputy trustee was entitled to demand and receive 7% commission, 25¢ receipt fee when he collected taxes on defendant Rarick on 27 April 1932. Additional defendant: Mrs. J. H. Rarick, wife of defendant.

Incomplete file; only McClellan's brief to Supreme Court. 1875: Johnson convicted of robbery in Shelby County; sentenced to 21 yrs, 5 yrs of which Gov. Alvin Hawkins commuted in 1883. Also in 1883, TN passed law allowing time off sentence for "good time". Also passed law to allow leasing out of prisoner labor (1st work release program in country). This case involves Johnson's 2nd attempt to use the "good time" law to get out of prison, despite 2 escapes & 1 attempted escape.

De Foor was tried for murdering Joe Williams in 1888. Transcript contains colorful testimony. Witness said that she and Williams were furnishing music for a lawn party given at a private home. Near midnight, defendant remarked that there was his cousin dancing with "Big Sis," a reference to Joe's wife. This offended Mrs. Williams, so she sought and received an apology; Joe asked likewise. Shortly, a gunfight and chase ensued, ending in Joe's death. Hand-drawn map shows key locations on street & alley.

Bill Hayle is accused of killing eighteen year old Charlie Stewart, shooting him with a single barrel shotgun. Hayle testified that Stewart was a young bootlegger with a temper who employed foul language. The night of the shooting he was verbally ass- faulting Hayle and his wife, while brandishing a knife. Witnesses testified that Hayle suffers mental illness caused by pelagra.

Plaintiff in error, alias Ether Moore, is accused of unlawfully receiving liquor. Police searched plaintiff's home at 874 E. 4th Street in Chattanooga and found several containers of whiskey. Plaintiff's husband, Charlie Moore, had previously been arrested on the same charge.

Plaintiff is appealing the charge of "Assault with intent to commit Voluntary Manslaughter." Case is incomplete; opinion only.

Horton is accused of attempting to steal money, chattels and personal property of J. E. Rhodes while he and his wife were sleeping with intent to convert the same to his own use.

Cause of Action: Violating Pawnbroker's Ordinance.
