Edward Smith died, leaving wife Catharine, to whom he left his plantation & negro woman Agnes (& daughter Nelly & issue) for Catharine's life, then to Edward's youngest daughter Nancy. Other issue of Agnes: Abigail, Alfred, James, Isaac. Nancy married Vaught Heaton; they had 5 children: Esther, John, Edmund, Mary, & Catharine (who married Allen Goodwin). Joseph G. Smith of Granville Co., MS sued for ownership of slaves, Hannah & Harriett, conveyed by deed of gift to himself & his deceased wife, Rachel, by his father-in-law John Clark. Clark dec. Washington Co. 7 Oct. 1825. Deed reg. in York Dist., SC. Stuart doubts validity of Smith's claim. Clark sold Harriett to Henry Ernest of Greene Co. on 13 Aug. 1824, & Hannah to Joan WAdd.e in Oct. 1824. Clark's heirs & the children of Harriett & Hannah named in transcript. |
