Cox, night policeman of Humboldt, killed Carl Ladd and Gaston Croom after they attempted to run him over. Cox thought a car, driven by Ladd, matched the description of a stolen car, and tried to stop the vehicle speeding down Main Street. The car swerved to hit Cox, missed, and turned around tried again, left and came back to try a third time. Cox attempted to shoot out a tire, but missed and hit Ladd. The bullet passed through Ladd and lodged in Croom, killing the later instantly. Ladd died in the road. |
