Sheriff's bond of A. B. Conner, elected Sheriff 26 March 1870. In the November Term 1871 the grand jury certified that Conner's official bonds were insufficient. He was given 10 days to "justify his present security or to give a good and sufficient bond"

Gillespie got judgment against Whitney on 2 pieces of negotiable paper, but Whitney claims judgments are void as they did not comply w/demand & notice rules governing negotiable paper.

Additional plaintiffs: Elizabeth M. Davis, John Calliway, guardian of George Callaway; George Pannel and wife Bethany Pannel. Additional documents located in ET 1245.

The dispute revolved around the amount paid to have water supplied.

Debt due by account for $100 plus interest.

Incomplete case file. Plaintiff in error is commanded to appear before the court to answer a plea of debt due by acceptance under a magistrates Jurisdiction. This case file was originally stapled to the case file for John W. Brown and Co. v. C.W. Spicer also located in ET 1217.

Other defendants: Samuel H. Conner; David N. McGill; Peter Mounger; Daniel C. Trewhitt; Archibald McCallie. Trewhitt possibly Daniel Coffee Trewhitt (1823-1891), Judge & in Radical Republican camp during Reconstruction. A. B. Conner was sheriff of Hamilton County & was being sued for "breach of covenant" in performing his duties as sheriff. Co-defendants were his securities on his bond.

Additional def.s.: Elizabeth Hinton, widow; William, John, Della & Richard Hinton, children of John Hinton, dec. Admr. Carroll originally sued the railroads for $20,000, charging them with negligence in Hinton's death. Hinton, an employee of the Nash- ville & Chattanooga RR Co., was killed on 17 Aug. 1868, when the hand car he was riding on was struck by a train managed & controlled by one of the defts. There was some question as to which train struck him. 2 Folders.

Alfred Hulse, Administrator (dec.) for the use of the plaintiff who is his widow. Additional plaintiffs are their children, all minors. sued for damages in the sum of $20,000.

R.W. Chumley is sued the Nash. And Chatt. Railroad Co. for $137.96 in damages. Chumley was the engineer of one of their trains that was involved in a collision.

Cause of Action: Petition for Supersedeas. Defendant obtained a previous judgment against plaintiff for possession of a home in Chattanooga, Tennessee, on lot number 23, on Market Street, and on which the Bon Jon Saloon is situated.

Dispute between Capt Ben & wife Sarah Nicklin & Dr. Goodwin over south half of lot 30 on Market Street in Chattanooga. Jury awarded possession of the land to the Nicklins. Sarah Nicklin had purchased the property at a court sale. Goodwin had been staying on the property w/o paying rent. On previous occasions, parties had purportedly reached agreement, but Goodwin said he couldn't sign it due to being unwell / having nervous spell. Others mentioned: Captain Lucas.

Defendants: Frank Warren, William Rogers, and Jasper Raines. Incident of 1 Jan. 1871, "willfully disturbed and disgraced an assembly of persons met for religious worship at Pleasant Hill Church, by noise, whispering, laughing, talking, and many other acts of such." Judgment rendered, fine of $20 each.

Other defendants: Stephen Hyatt; R. W. House; Leander W. Townsend; Azariah Carpenter; Dardin Smith; E. B. Stoddard; Caleb Framburger; S. Crane. Phipps & Kroft dissolved their business partnership in Dec. 1860. Kroft agreed to take over assets & debts of business from Phipps. Kroft did not pay all of firm's debts & judgments had been issued against Phipps to settle those debts. Phipps claimed to be no longer responsible for them.

Plea of debt due by promissory notes. Damages of $132.30. Case mentions Statutes of the State of Georgia drawn into question. "change bills" or fractional currency questioned. Includes decision of U.S. District Court, E. Dist. of Tenn. "validity of certain Statutes of the State of Georgia on the ground of their being repugnant to the Constitution of the (U.S.) .. drew into question the construction clause of the 14th Amend. "
